Those affected range from fishermen to business owners who have suffered economic damages as a result of the spill. Specifically, some of the businesses and people most affected by the BP oil spill include:
- Fishing, Shrimping, Oyster Companies & Employees
- Hospitality & Tourism Businesses & Employees
- Property & Boat Owners
- Shipping & Trade Business & Employees
- Vacationers (lost vacation deposits & expenses)

- Restaurant Owners & Employees
BP Establishing $20 Billion Trust Fund
BP has established a $20 Billion Trust Fund that will be used to fund direct claims filed with BP on behalf of those who have suffered losses. The use of the BP escrow fund is intended to avoid a repeat of the painful aftermath of 1989 Exxon Valdez oil disaster in Alaska, when the fight over money dragged out in courts over roughly two decades.
“What this is about is accountability," said President Obama in brief remarks in the State Dining Room after a four-hour, on-again, off-again White House negotiation session with BP executives. "For the small-business owners, for the fishermen, for the shrimpers, this is not just a matter of dollars and cents. ... A lot of these folks don't have a cushion."
Lawsuits are time-consuming and have a tendency to drag out, potentially taking years to recover. Although a lawsuit may ultimately be necessary in some cases, we are committed to filing direct claims with BP for payment to individuals and business who have suffered ANY type of economic loss as a result of Gulf Oil Spill.
